Top 5 Smashpop-Rated Cafes in KL in 2014

If you are staying in Kuala Lumpur, you would be aware that cafes have been popping up every week throughout the year of 2014. Some offers coffee and desserts while some serve all-day breakfast and pastries.

With all the cafes of different styles, themes and location, it’s often hard to decide which is good or which is best for coffee, ambience and food served. But don’t worry as I have done the work for you and have been cafe hopping throughout the whole of this year.

To all my Instagram followers, the #smashpoprates hashtag is a very familiar thing to look out for whenever I post a quick review of a cafe I visit. It basically gives readers a simple guide of my own opinion about a certain cafe whether it’s about the food, coffee, environment or services.

Below are 5 cafes which received the highest #smashpoprates in 2014. Note that they are all based on my own opinion and taste. You may have a different point of view and I totally respect that.

Without further ado, let’s start with number 5.

#5 – Metal Box Restaurant & Cafe [#smashpoprates 7/10]

Located at the ground floor of Empire Damansara, Metal Box serves western selection to all sorts of breakfast and brunch meals. Coffee is good.
One can never miss the black coloured metal container which is an extension of the cafe towards the outdoor area of the building. Pictured above is ‘Red Benedict’ and flatwhite, both available on the menu.

#4 – Quartet TTDI [#smashpoprates 7.5/10]

Famous for its home-baked doughnuts and Chelsea buns, Quartet in TTDI also serves good coffee (acidic though) and all day breakfast sets.
The main reason for this cafe getting high rating is mainly because of the friendly service and great outdoor ambience. Located in the TTDI housing area, having a cuppa at the outdoor area facing the houses gives a very comfortable feeling.

#3 – Underground Société [#smashpoprates 7.5/10]

One of the latest cafes in town is the 3rd outlet by the 2 brothers who brought you Coffee Société in Publika and Garage 51 in Sunway. Underground Société is conveniently located behind Garage 51 and serves alcohol and proper fine dining-like food apart from the usual coffee menu. Lobster Benedict, Underground Grenade and Baileys Latte are some of the must-trys when you visit ‘US’. But make sure you have some cash with you cos a proper dinner or lunch might cost you quite a bit here.

#2 – Cat In The Box [#smashpoprates 8/10]

When you ask someone about Cat In The Box, they would most probably tell you about the full glass wall and roof, which allows full natural lighting into the cafe, lightening up the otherwise dark interior. Frankly, the interior scores really big part of the ratings in this one. Coffee is great. If you make friends with the boss, she will most likely draw something special for you on your cup of flat white or latte. Don’t forget to try their curried lamb pie while posing on the spiral staircase which is located right in the middle of the cafe!

#1 – Feeka [#smashpoprates 8.5/10]

I fell in love with this cafe on the first time I visited it. Located at the humble side of Changkat Bukit Bintang, the neighbourhood is quiet while hiding in the busiest area in the heart of KL. The cafe has 2 floors but the top floor is quite empty and acts as a n art space somewhat.
Best time to visit Feeka is around 4-6PM when it is not sunny. Be sure to relax on those beach chairs decked out at the outdoor area and enjoy their all-day breakfast. One of my favorite is the one pictured above, ‘Scramble Platter w Lamb Sausage’. The coffee is also very good, coupled with art that is poured out of love.

Grey Sky Morning [#smashpoprates 7/10]:

Best cafe for Instagrammers. Natural lighting from everywhere on the top floor. No food though, just cakes.
Bangunan EX8, Jalan SS13/4, Subang Jaya.

Caffeinated Cabin [#smashpoprates 7/10]

If you are looking for a tiny glass house-like cafe which shares the same bungalow with a saloon, they try this one out. Good coffee, unique brunch menu.

The Curious Goat [#smashpoprates 7/10]

To all girls (and guys) who are into staring at good looking baristas while sipping coffee, check out The Curious Goat. Opened by 3 young man who aspires to educate and share their coffee knowledge with everyone, it’s definitely a cafe to visit when you are at Damansara Perdana.
